NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. — While some people are throwing out old pumpkins after the Thanksgiving and Halloween holidays, others are stocking up on them.
For the last three years, Chesterfield resident Dave Lipp and his friends, Brooke Gilbert and Chan Mohney, have been collecting pumpkins to donate to the New Hope Rescue in New Kent.
“I’ve probably gotten one hundred emails from people saying, I’ve got one pumpkin. I’ve got some, come pick them up,” said Lipp.
The team loaded two truck-loads and an additional vehicle full of pumpkins in Chesterfield before transporting them to the rescue Sunday.
When the bounty arrived, dozens of rescued animals were ready for their afternoon snack.
“Most all the farm grazing-type animals will eat pumpkins,” James Priest said. “And even the chickens and turkeys will eat them,”
He is married to the woman who runs New Hope Rescue, Lori Priest.
“Horses and large animals — pretty much any critter that needs rescuing, she’ll rescue it,” Priest said of his wife Lori.
How cool is this!? Instead of throwing out old pumpkins, some people in Chesterfield are collecting hundreds of them to donate to New Hope Animal Rescue in New Kent. The animals love them! @CBS6pic.twitter.com/zskbPrpGUf
New Hope Rescue gives animals all across Central Virginia a second chance.
“A lot of these animals come here with no future, or in desperate conditions, and she will bring them back to health — revitalize them,” Priest said.
He said the organization relies on donations like these pumpkins to operate.
“Today we probably brought down close to 300 and we brought down 250 in the past week or two,” said Lipp. “No day is a good day unless you’ve done an act of kindness, and this is a wonderful act of kindness. And everybody donating pumpkins makes it easy on us.”
Fire crews and police helped get the animals out safely and the organization has since reopened its doors.
Quick actions saved the lives of several animals on Saturday when a fire erupted at a metro Atlanta animal shelter.
The fire happened around 8:30 a.m. when part of the air system caught fire at the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia in Gainesville.
Officials with the organization said that team members were already at work and called the fire department who immediately showed up at the scene along with Gainesville police officers.
The fire was contained and the human society reported that all animals were safe. On social media, the shelter reported that most of the damage was likely smoke and later confirmed that they were able to reopen at noon.
They also thanked Hall County for their “pawesome” first responders.
Animal shelters are very important because they care for abandoned or neglected animals. They also provide temporary homes for animals on the street. Animal shelters are invaluable to communities around the world. They work for a noble cause, helping those who have no voice.
Sadly, nowadays doing good doesn’t guarantee to fund. Having good intentions and working hard doesn’t necessarily mean that your animal shelter will meet its fundraising goals.
3 Unique Animal Rescue FundraIdeasg Ideas
1. Dog Walks or Runs
Most dog breeds were developed with a specific purpose in mind, for example, sporting, working, herding and so forth. Consequently, whether your pet is a purebred or mixed breed, chances are he carries genetic traits that drive him to pursue an activity.
Many modern-day dogs don’t get opportunities to do what their breed instincts tell them to do. In addition, it’s a rare dog that exercises on his own, and your backyard doesn’t provide the variety of sensory stimulation most dogs need to ward off boredom.
Dogs need walks for both exercise and mental stimulation.
According to Clinician’s Brief:
Generally, people walk their dog for 4 reasons: elimination, mental stimulation, exercise, and training. Dogs like to go for walks to get outdoors, sniff and engage with their environment, exercise, and perhaps socialize with people and dogs outside the home. There is no reason that a walk cannot encompass and meet all the needs of both humans and dogs. Because time is often at a premium, it is useful to help owners understand and find creative ways to meet these needs.
2. Crowdfunding for pet care
Modern veterinary care is expensive. Owners are demanding, and veterinarians are increasingly able to provide a higher standard of care than they used to, and costs have risen as a result. Pet insurance and a savings account specifically for veterinary expenses are the best ways to protect yourself from having to make care decisions based solely on finances, but sometimes these safeguards don’t go far enough.
More and more, pet parents are turning to crowdfund to help with large and/or unexpected veterinary bills. But before you head in that direction, you should be aware of the pros and cons.
If crowdfunding doesn’t feel like the right fit for you, consider contacting one or more charities. The Humane Society of the United States maintains an excellent list of national and state organizations that provide financial assistance to pet owners in need. Finally, don’t forget to talk directly to your veterinarian. The clinic may have a charitable fund to help in situations like yours, or your vet may be able to put you in contact with a local group or benefactor who can help.
3. Dog Washing Events
A dog washing event is a fun and engaging animal shelter fundraising idea. Best organized in summer, it’s a great activity for the entire family.
To organize dog washing, source a suitable location and get your local pet stores to donate dog washing supplies (e.g. pet shampoo or brushes).
Similarly to a car washing fundraising event, owners can bring their pets over for quick cleaning in exchange for a small donation.
Set up a station with drinks, tables, and chairs, so families and friends can relax and spend time together while their pups are getting washed.
This is a cheap, quick, and convenient option for washing pets – which is always desirable for pet owners. In addition to that, they get to spend time outside and support a great cause!
